Prayer was the secret of Jesus' extraordinary life.  He prayed always, and His heart was strong enough to bear the whole world in compassion and with an unconquerable joy.  The goal of the spiritual life is to shape our heart in the mold of the heart of Jesus.  We find that for ourselves, as for Jesus, continuous prayer is not only a sustained practice, but a sustaining one, not only a means to find God, but the medium of life lived close with God, not only a source of comfort and inspiration, but a consecrating of our lives in service around God's will and way.  Eventually, observes E. Herman, "our whole life is ordered after a Divine pattern ..."  Prayer, in short, sculpts us, heart, mind, and spirit, to be Christlike.
